Survey of employer performance.

The Amicus Information Technology Professionals Association (ITPA) representing 12,000 IT professionals amongst the union’s 400,000 members is today publishing the results of its survey of employer performance. The results are published in the form of league tables of employer performance broken down into 5 categories covering Pay and Conditions; Job Satisfaction and Treatment; Career and Skills Development; Work, Health and Lifestyle; and Employee Representation.

The survey represents the results of questionnaires completed by Amicus (formally MSF) members and non-members covering a number of major employers of IT professionals in the IT and financial services sector and embraces both outsourced and non-outsourced groups of employees.

Key findings are:

  • in general, non-outsourced groups of employees rate their employer higher than where groups have been outsourced from their original employer
  • IBM is generally rated well and Digital generally poorly by their employees
  • IBM is rated lower under Pay and Conditions and Job Satisfaction and Treatment than might be expected from its rating under other categories
  • ICL is rated highly under Job Satisfaction and Treatment, but lower under Pay and Conditions and Employee Representation
  • Prudential Assurance is rated lower under Career and Skills Development and Work, Health and Lifestyle than might be expected from its rating under other categories
  • NCR is rated lower than expected under Work, Health and Lifestyle than might be expected from its rating under other categories
  • Digital is rated very low in Employee Representation and is the only employer covered which refuses to have any formal dialogue with representatives of Amicus

Peter Skyte, National Secretary of the Amicus IT Professionals Association, said:

"Employers have for some time assessed the performance of their employees, but this is the first time a trade union has attempted to benchmark the performance of employers. This process involving assessment by employees is intended to become an annual exercise with published league tables representing the assessment of IT professionals, and we are considering extending this to all other employers covered by Amicus. By turning the tables in this way and highlighting examples of good and bad employer performance, we aim to empower and assist Amicus representatives in negotiations with their employer."

Note for Editors:

The completed questionnaires were analysed by Quality Data Preparation and cover the answers to 25 questions asked of all respondents and 30 questions asked of outsourced respondents under 5 categories covering Pay and Conditions; Job Satisfaction and Treatment; Career and Skills Development; Work, Health and Lifestyle; and Employee Representation.

The answers were then scored from 5 (highest rated) to 1 (lowest rated) and statistical means calculated under each category and overall. The maximum possible score under each category and overall is therefore 5 and the lowest 1.
