1998/99 Survey of Employer Performance

This Survey of Employer Performance is based on 500 returns from Amicus (formally MSF) representatives and was carried out over the period October 1998 to March 1999.

The results reflect the two parts of the survey. Part A covers a wider range of employers of IT professionals and represents our annual survey, enabling MSF members to assess the performance of their employer as it impacts upon their working life. Part B covers employees who have transferred employment from one employer to another either through outsourcing or by takeover/merger, and seeks to compare treatment before and after the transfer, ie between the old and the new employer.

The completed questionnaires were analysed by Quality Data Preparation and cover the answers to 25 questions asked of all respondents and 30 questions asked of transferred respondents under 5 categories covering Pay and Conditions; Job Satisfaction and Treatment; Career and Skills Development; Work, Health and Lifestyle; and Employee Representation. The answers were then scored from 5 (highest rated) to 1 (lowest rated) and statistical means calculated under each category and overall. The maximum possible score under each category and overall is therefore 5 and the lowest 1. Figures in brackets refer to the data for the previous year. s survey covering 1997/98.

KEY GENERAL FINDINGS

  • Friends Provident retains its top spot from last year and CSC comes bottom of the overall benchmarking

  • 3 of the top 4 companies for overall performance are financial services companies

  • MSF members rate IBM highest and CSC lowest amongst respondents who have transferred employment by outsourcing or takeover

  • All employers with the exception of NCR have improved their performance from last year as rated by employees

  • Employers are rated appreciably lower by MSF members for Career and Skills Development and Employee Representation than for other categories. These are clearly areas which employers need to address.

  • Amongst those employees who had transferred employment via outsourcing or takeover, Job Satisfaction and Career and Skills Development showed a marked increase in rating than 12 months ago, perhaps reflecting more stability over time.

  • MSF members are much less satisfied over Employee Representation than they were 12 months ago, a somewhat surprising outcome as the expectation might have been that this would improve over time.

SPECIFIC FEATURES

  • For Pay and Conditions, Scottish Widows is rated highest and Medical Research Council (MRC) the lowest. CSC, Compaq, EDS, IBM and ICL are rated higher and NCR is rated lower than last year

  • For Job Satisfaction and Treatment, Origin is rated highest and CSC the lowest.

  • For Career and Skills Development, Friends Provident is rated highest and NCR the lowest. Compaq is rated substantially higher and CGU and NCR substantially lower than last year.

  • For Work, Health and Lifestyle, IBM is rated highest and Compaq the lowest. Friends Provident shows a substantial fall in its rating

  • For Employee Representation, Friends Provident is rated highest and Compaq the lowest. CSC and EDS are rated appreciably lower than last year by comparison of pre- and post-transfer treatment.

SPECIFIC COMPANY FEATURES

  • CGU, formed by the merger of General Accident and Commercial Union, is rated amongst the top 3 in every category with the exception of Career and Skills Development, where in contrast it is rated surprisingly low - and lower than last year.

  • Compaq has improved its performance compared with MSF members assessment of Digital 12 months ago. This may reflect their post takeover treatment and the settling of issues which had led to a low overall rating for Digital in the previous year. s survey. It comes bottom for Work, Health and Lifestyle and Employee Representation.

  • CSC is unfavourably rated by comparison with other companies for Career and Skills Development and also by comparison with its rating for other categories.

  • EDS is rated relatively high for Career and Skills Development but relatively low for Work, Health and Lifestyle

  • Friends Provident is rated in the top 3 of every category except for Work, Health and Lifestyle

  • IBM is rated very highly for Work, Health and Lifestyle and Career and Skills Development but relatively lowly for Job Satisfaction and Treatment
